Advantages and disadvantages of GaN chargers.

  Pros: Small size and safety

  Compared with common semiconductor silicon material, GaN has wider band gap and good thermal conductivity, which can match smaller transformers and high power inductors, so GaN chargers have the advantages of small size, high efficiency and safety. Recent flagship phones and tablets have relatively high charger power to achieve faster charging speed, 40W50W chargers are very common. More charging power means that the size of the charger is also getting bigger and generating serious heat.

  By switching to GaN technology, chargers can be greatly reduced in size and very portable, while GaN chargers can also maintain efficient and low-temperature operation for better safety.

  Disadvantage: High cost

  The main disadvantage of GaN chargers is the high cost. As a new third generation compound, GaN has very high requirements for synthesis environment. From the manufacturing process, GaN has no liquid state and cannot use traditional single crystal silicon direct pulling method to pull single crystal. The price is also higher than traditional chargers.
